Introduction to Gajal

Gajal is the oldest form of poetry ever used. The word ‘gajal’ in some languages is called “ghajal” and in others it is pronounced “gu-ZAHL”, although in both cases the word “g” is almost identical to “ch” in “Bach.” It is said that the word comes from the sound of a squirrel being injured when it dies. The form comes from Arabic, Nepali, Urdu, Hindi, and Hebrew. It remains popular as a style sung in parts of the world where the distinction between poetry (spoken word) and song lyrics (lyrics, with specific music) is not very different.

The official features of ghajal were well known in English in the 1920’s, however, with the translation of the free ghajal verse in the 1960s, many Western writers thought of ghajal as a way of describing a series of cut-off couples. Beginning in the 1990s, Agha Shahid Ali began to insist on the official principles of what he called “real” ghajal. You may object here — perhaps emphasizing that the poem of the free verse is not as real as the official poem, but I promise — if you had met Shahid, you would have immediately become interested, and agreed immediately. If you had met Shahid, you would have written at least three or four gajals by now.


उस्ले भनेथ्यो माया सब झुटो हो 

म भने 

तेरो माया परोस भगवान् गरोस 

अनि कोहि तलाइ त्योबाट टाढा गरोस 


तेरो ओठ मुस्कुराउन भुलोस 

तेरो आँखा सधै उसैको सपना देखोस 


त उस्को कुरा गर्ने गरोस 

त उस्को कुरा सुन्ने गरोस 


तलाइ मायाको यस्तो झरी लागोस

त सधै उसैलाइ याद गरोस 


उ तेरो साथी बन्न नि तयार नहोस 

त सधै एक्लै एक्लै घुम्ने गरोस 


तेरो सपना फुटोस ऎना सरि 

त टुत्रा टुत्रा तिप्ने गरोस 


अनि म भन्छु माया सब झुटो हो

 त मलाइ होइन होइन भन्ने गरोस




आफ्नो मर्यादाबाट यदि तिमी निस्किन्छौ 

सपना हुनेछौ साना कथामा ढल्नेछौ 


अब त अनुहार पनि पहिलेजस्तो छैन 

कस्लाइ थाहा थियो तिमी यति बद्लिन्छौ 


आफ्नो माटोमानै हिड्ने तरिका सिक 

मार्बलमा हिड्यौ भने तिमी चिप्लिन्छौ 


सपनाको कोठबाट निस्कन किन डराउछौ 

घाम यति चर्को त छैन कि तिमी पग्लिन्छौ 


पाइला छिटो बढाउ तर सम्हालियर

भिडमा ढिलो हिड्यौ भने तिमी कुल्चिन्छौ 


तिमी हो कहिल्यै ननिभ्ने दियो

साझको घाम हैनौ कि तिमी ढल्किन्छौ ।।



सबै जलेर गयो जलिरहेको सपनाको असरले 

निकाल्छ धुवाँ दिलले आखाले जिगरले ।।


आज उस्को मलामिला छ मान्छेको कोलाहल 

हिजो मरेथ्यो जो एक्लोपनको डरले ।।


त्यो मान्छे अब उठ्न मुस्किल छ 

घृणा गर्छु भन्छ आफ्नै नजरले ।।


छुटेको सम्बन्ध कहिले सम्म निभाउ म 

उसैलाइ पर्खिदै अझै समाजको करले ।। 


माया गरेर यति त थाहा भयो 

छातीकै बाटो रोज्दो रहेछ खन्जरले ।।


दह्रो मुटु चाहिन्छ अघि बढ्न ए दोस्त 

कमजोरलाई यसै पनि हेप्दो रहेछ सफरले ।।



After reading these Gajals you maye also want to write some. Writing a ghazal is like looking in a broken mirror. The refrain determines the title, but each couplet is similar to one of the glass letters. You see the concept of “master” over and over again, but always from a different perspective or lens. The ghazal reverses the fusion of voice, narration, and controversy we are accustomed to in the West. It is free to talk to the subject at different angles, in different places. You can build without having to stay in line. You can get as many angles as you want. It makes testers of all of us.
